Here we interview Russell Moore. Managing Director of Food Industry Recruitment Company R&L Executive Network Ltd who has a specialist knowledge of recruiting in the food sector.
You must be learning constantly about new products of all the companies, science never stops.
Another important challenge is to try to “uniform” knowledge and information in your team, I mean that everybody (the staff) understands and speaks the “same language” about the companies’ products.
You have to be passionate and strong willed enough to make sure that you are heard in senior meetings if you are confident about your decision.
As part of my job I oversee the work of the quality control chemists and help prioritise their work. We’re involved in testing batches of products, setting specifications, and ensuring product consistency. I also approve suppliers and risk-assess raw materials.
The main thin I enjoy is that there is always potential for me to develop both technically and personally as I face a wide range of challenges and have to keep up to date with technological advances which are prevalent in this industry at the moment. The job is very rewarding when everything is going to plan however there is a lot of things that can go wrong before the end result is reached leading to plenty of stressful moments in my week.
I have always been interested in Marketing products as opposed to services and saw this as the ideal opportunity to establish myself in the FMCG sector and work with world class colleagues in order to develop myself whilst increasing brand awareness for the company. I applied for the position via a recruitment company who managed my application and guided me through the interview process.
I enjoy watching the impact I can make in moving the business to a new place, and creating better offerings for the company. It can be a challenge because no two days are alike and there is a lot of multi-tasking, from disciplinary hearings to recruitment you have to be adaptable to all situations.
It’s nice to come into the development kitchen in the morning, prepare my ingredients and get to work whilst the office staff are just sitting down at their desks and opening emails, it always brings a smile to my face.
Tell me about your background and how you eventually became a Factory Manager
I started my career as a manufacturing graduate and was luckily enough to be taken on as a Graduate Management Trainee scheme with a large food manufacturer. As my career progressed I worked in many areas of the business and completed a number [...]
Throughout the day my role is to ensure the supply chain is running efficiently. I monitor raw materials deliveries, stock movement and storage levels ensuring they are completed to the best standard and in the time possible.
I always wanted to work in the Food sector after completing a summer placement at a Birds Eye Walls site for Unilever whilst I was still at University. Health & Safety compliance is so prevalent in this sector and I often get to attend conferences across Europe which enables me to meet and build a network of EH&S professionals with whom to share knowledge.
